Denial is an enunciative modality that exists in all languages ​​and that tries to communicate that something is not happening or does not exist. For example: They didn't finish on time.

The negative sentence can be conceived as the reverse of the affirmative sentence, which expresses an affirmation. Negative sentences are usually less clear than affirmative ones, because when something is denied a range of possibilities opens up that the receiver of the message can think of, but has no way of solving.

For example, if someone tells us: I don't get to the morning, there remains the possibility that it arrives in the afternoon, at night, at noon.

Characteristics of negative sentences

• Negative sentences usually have a negation adverb, which is "no" in most cases.
• There are also other grammatical constructions of similar semantic value. For example: "not at all" or "not at all".
• Denial can also be expressed through other words like "never", "nothing", "nobody" and "no". In these cases, the denial also implies an idea framed in time and in the subjects that surround the communicative situation.
• Sometimes the negative intention is concealed in other enunciative modalities, such as the question, used with some frequency in the framework of dialogical communication. If while someone performs a certain movement another asks Why do you do it like this? with a reproachful tone, it is very likely that what he is really trying to say is that he does not do it.
• Unlike what happens in other languages, in Spanish negation has a particular property, which is that it is not subject to the question of duplicate cancellation.
