The monosyllable words They are the ones that cannot be separated into syllables because they only have one and are perceived as a unit. For example: law, peace, flower.

Monosyllable words are short: they usually have one to four letters that sound like a continuous block.

When do they have an accent?

As a general rule, monosyllable words do not have an accent.

The idea that underlies this rule is that in all cases, in the monosyllabic word the last vowel that it has is tonic, because if the tonicity were in a vowel prior to that one, it would have proceeded to a separation into syllables.

The diacritical tilde

There is a limited number of monosyllable words that admit more than one meaning and therefore the diacritical mark is used to avoid confusion. For example: from (preposition) / from (imperative of the verb "give"), tea (infusion) / tea (pronoun), yes (affirmative adverb) / yes (conditional conjunction).

Onomatopoeia and interjections

A final group of words that are part of monosyllables are onomatopoeia, which are constructions intended to try to imitate a real sound. For example: Zaz! Boom!

Interjections, which express a sudden emotion, are also usually monosyllabic. For example: Oh! Oh!
