The first conditional (first conditional or conditional type 1) in English is a tense that is used to talk about real possibilities in the future.
This is an action that will occur if a certain condition is met.
Structure of the first conditional:If + condition in present simple + Outcome
- If I get there on time, I will help you get ready for the party. / If I'm on time, I'll help you get ready for the party.
- I will help you get ready for the party if I get there on time. / I'll help you get ready for the party if I'm on time.
Examples of first conditional in english
- If he tells the truth, they will forgive him. / If you tell the truth, they will forgive you.
- If we leave now we may get there by two. / If we go out now, we may arrive at two.
- If we are not there when they arrive, they can wait at the pub. / If we are not there when they arrive, they can wait for us at the pub.
- If you start doing exercise you may lose some weight. / If you start exercising, you may lose weight.
- If you find a mistake, I will correct it. / If you find a mistake I will fix it.
