The exclamatory adjectives are those adjectives that are used to give emphasis and intensity to a sentence. They have no meaning by themselves and many of them do not vary in gender and number. For example: ¡How many roses!

How are they different from the rest of the adjectives?

  • All adjectives are characterized by modifying a noun, expressing its characteristics or properties. Exclamatory adjectives have no meaning by themselves. For example: I'm sorry a lot. / ¡How much I'm sorry!
  • Most of the adjectives are found next to the noun they refer to. The exclamatory adjectives are at the beginning of the sentence. For example: His eyes huge. / ¡What eyes!
  • Most of the adjectives are modified to achieve agreement with the noun, both in number and gender. Some exclamatory adjectives are invariable. For example: ¡What nice day! /What nice days!

Exclamatory adjectives and exclamatory adverbs

The same word can function, depending on the context, as an exclamatory adverb or as an exclamatory adjective. In order to distinguish one from the other, it is necessary to observe which word they modify:

  • If you modify a noun, it is an exclamatory adjective. For example: ¡What problem!
  • If it modifies an adjective, an adverb or a verb, it is an exclamatory adverb. For example: ¡What beautiful!

Exclamatory adjectives and interrogative adjectives

Many exclamatory adjectives are also used to formulate questions. In the written language, the difference is marked by the signs (exclamation or question marks). In spoken language the difference is marked by the intonation and intention of the sentence.

Exclamatory adjectives and interrogative adjectives always carry an accent. For example: What do you want to eat? / That good!
