A sentence is a structure that has complete meaning. Two-member sentences are those that are composed of a subject (who executes the action) and a predicate (the action that is executed). For example: Juan (subject) lives in Argentina (predicate).

There are also single-member sentences, which are those that do not have a subject or predicate and, therefore, are made up of a single member. For example: Hi!

Single-member sentences should not be confused with double-member sentences with an unspoken subject. In the latter case, the sentences have a subject (someone who performs the action) that is not explicit in the sentence but that is understood by context. For example: I went to the party. (Unspoken subject: me)

Although the natural order of the sentence is subject + predicate, they can also be moved. For example: His house was nice. / His house was beautiful.

Subject

The subject is the syntactic figure that performs the action. It is usually composed of a nucleus (which can be a noun or a substantive construction) and modifiers, which expand the information.

How to identify the subject?

In order to find the subject easily, you must answer the question Who? / Who?

For example: The dog barks loudly. Who is barking loud? The dog. So "the dog" is the subject of this sentence.

Another way to find it is to look for the agreement with the verb. In this case, the verb is "bark". If the subject were "dogs", the verb should be "bark". Therefore, everything that is affected by the conjugation of the verb will be the subject.

Subject types

Depending on the number of cores you have:

  • Simple subject. It has only one nucleus. For example: My mother is sick. ("mother" is the only nucleus of the sentence)
  • Composite subject. It has more than one core. For example: My mother and sister are ill. ("mother" and "sister" are the two nuclei of the sentence)

According to the presence expressed or not in the sentence:

  • Express subject. It is written verbatim. For example: I told you. ("I" is the express subject)
  • Tacit subject. It is not written but it is understood by context. For example: I told you. (Unspoken subject: "I")

Predicate

The predicate is composed of the verb that exercises the action. Always indicate what the subject of the sentence does (or what it is).

In order to find the predicate we must answer the question:What, what happened? o What did he do?

For example: Horacio sang on the spot. What did Horacio do? He sang on the spot. ("sang on the spot" is the predicate)

Predicate types

According to the number of verbal nuclei:

  • Simple predicate. It has only one verbal core. For example: Camila dance very well. ("dance" is the only verbal nucleus)
  • Compound predicate. It has more than one verbal core. For example: Camila dance Y sings very well. ("dance" and "sing" are the two verbal nuclei)

According to the presence or absence of a verb:

  • Verbal predicate. It has one or more conjugated verbs. For example: The students They were attentive. ("were" is the verbal nucleus)
  • Non-verbal or nominal predicate. It has no verb, and instead a comma appears to replace it. For example: The students, attentive. ("attentive" is the noun kernel of the predicate)
