An adjective is a word that determines or characterizes a noun. Qualifying adjectives, on the other hand, qualify or provide information about the qualities of nouns.
These adjectives can be classified in several ways: one of them is the distinction between positive and negative qualifying adjectives.
- Negative qualifying adjectives. They provide information that disqualifies, detracts or indicates some negative quality. For example: dirty, old, broken.
- Positive qualifying adjectives. They indicate a pleasant characteristic, accepted by society. For example: beautiful, smooth, shiny, shiny.
The importance of context
Many times it is essential to understand the context in which adjectives are used to identify whether they are used as positive or negative. For example: Today I will release my shirt new. / The receptionist does not know anything, it must be new.
In the first case, the adjective (new) provides positive information regarding the noun it accompanies (t-shirt). However, in the second case, the same adjective (new) is used in a disqualifying way in relation to the noun (receptionist).
