Homonyms are those terms that are spelled and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. They are also called polysemic words, since they have more than one meaning. For example: language (language) or language (organ of the mouth).

To identify which of all the meanings the word refers to, it is necessary to place it in a context. For example, if you hear the word "bank", you can think of a seat to sit in the square or in a financial institution.

  • I went to cash the check at the bank. From the context we will know that it refers to the financial institution.
  • I'm waiting for you sitting on that bench. From the context we will know that it refers to the seat.

Homonyms must be differentiated from homophones, which are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. For example: wave Y Hi; hunting Y House, one hundred Y temple.

Homonyms are also not the same as paronyms, which are words that sound and are spelled similar, but have different meanings. For example: affected Y effect, absolve Y absorb.
