In English there are two types of verbs: regular and irregular. Regular verbs are conjugated following general rules. Irregular verbs take different forms in their conjugation.

Some characteristics of the regular conjugation:

  • Present simple: An s is added to the end of the verb for the third person singular (he, she, it).
  • Past simple: The ending ed is added.
  • The gerund is formed by adding the ending ing (removing the final vowel, if any).
  • When the verb ends in Y, it is replaced by i when adding the ending ed.
  • When the verb ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel, the consonant is repeated before adding the ending.
  • If the verb ends in e, it is removed before adding the ending. However, if it ends in ie, that ending is replaced by y.

As irregular verbs take particular forms, they must be memorized, since there are no rules for them.
