The prefix a- It is one of the most used in the Spanish language, and it can have several meanings:
- Negation prefix (Greek origin). It means opposition, lack or deprivation of something. It is used with its variant an- when the accompanying word begins with a vowel. For example: tomorpho (that has no form), tonormal (which is not normal).
- Locative prefix (Latin origin). It means proximity, contiguity or intensity. It is used with its variant ad- when the accompanying word begins with a vowel. For example: tobring (bring close).

Lack of meaning of the prefix
There are certain words in which the prefix a- does not have a clear meaning, but instead forms derived words, in general, adjectives derived from a noun.
For example: topassionate (who has passion), tobargain (to make cheaper), tosore (having pain), togloomy (who has grief), toheated (that is hot)
Words prefixed with a- as negation
- Aphonic. Who has no voice.
- Ungrammatical. No grammar.
- Amitosis. That it does not have mitosis.
- Amorphous. That it does not have a definite or regular shape.
- Anaerobe. That has no air.
- Illiterate. Person who does not have the ability to read.
- Anesthesia. That has no sensitivity.
- Anorexy. That he has no appetite.
- Abnormal. That is not normal.
- Anoxia. Loss of oxygen in the body.
- Apolitical. That it has no defined political ideology.
- Arrhythmia. That it does not have an even rhythm.
- Asexual. That he does not have sex.
- Asymmetric. That has no symmetry.
- Atheism. Who does not believe in God.
- Timeless. That does not exist or does not have time.
- Unstressed. That has no tone.
- Abiotic. That does not allow or does not allow life to exist.
- Amused. That he has no features.
- Dimensionless. Quantity without associated physical dimension.
- Caloric. That it has no heat or is it no calories.
- Carry. Having as negative consequences something based on an action or a certain procedure.
- Crammed. That he has a very formal demeanor and lacks spontaneity.
- Unscientific. That it has no scientific basis.
- Anomalous. That is irregular, has an odd shape or appearance.

Words with the prefix a- like proximity
- Grasp. Gripping or holding something more tightly.

There are many words that begin with the syllable a- but do not correspond to this prefix. Some examples:
- Afestonado. Which is adorned with festoons.

- Restrain. Submit someone.
- Variegated. Timbre of the human voice or also the sound of an instrument that resembles the sound of the baritone.
- Bustling. Low in the shape of a cliff.
- Cuddle. Plow the land for later sowing.
- Crammed. That it has badly combined colors.
- Cramp. Concern of great or excessive importance.
- Cantonment. That is limited only to a job or a certain task.
