Theserious words or plain words are those whose stressed syllable is the penultimate, according to the classification of the words according to where the stressed syllable is located (that is, the one that is pronounced with more emphasis). For example:facil, rana, cocina.

The other two most common classes of words in terms of stress are acute words, which have the last syllable as the stressed syllable, and esdrújula words, in which the stressed syllable is the third to last.

When do they have an accent?

To know which serious words have an accent or accent, we must follow a rule:

  • They do not have an accent if the grave word ends in n, s or vowel.
    For example: reitsmen, crowant, ACtre.
  • They do have an accent if the serious word ends in another letter.
    For example:gavefycil,flooor,Néstor.

Serious word stress exceptions

A tilde must be placed in words that form a hiatus (the union of a strong vowel with a weak tonic), even when the word ends in a vowel or in 'n' or 's'. For example: gavea, acyouto, dormeto, lior, increíble.

Diacritical tilde must be colored to distinguish interrogative / exclamatory pronouns from their respective relative, which do not have an accent. For example: Donfrom, howto, whones.

A tilde must be placed in words ending in 's' if this letter is preceded by another consonant. For example: records, biceps or forceps.

A tilde must be placed in adverbs ending in -mind when the adjective from which they come has an accent, thus generating the words overdrive. Although in the phonic they can be considered serious words (since the tonicity of the penultimate syllable is maintained) and because they end in a vowel they should not have an accent, if the adjective from which they originate carries it, this will also carry it, For example: úuseful, faeasily.
