Syllables can be classified into two groups: stressed syllables and unstressed syllables. Known as stressed syllable to the syllable that receives the stress in relation to the other syllables within a word.

These syllables may or may not have a written accent (tilde):

  • Accentuation with tilde. For example: excursion, subordination, bird, bat.
  • Phonetic or prosodic accentuation. For example: friendship, buy, gift, park, sight, lead, dungeon

The unstressed syllable or unstressed syllable, is one in which the prosodic accent of a word does not fall. Thus, it is common for a word to have more than one unstressed syllable (if it is an esdrújula or sobredrújula word) but it can only have one stressed syllable.

For example:Ex - cur - sion (example with tilde), to my - tad (example without accent mark).
