The deictic they are words that indicate, point to or allude to a subject, object, time or place. They are words that, by themselves, are meaningless. They only acquire meaning according to the context in which they are pronounced. For example:
- I like that. ("that" depends on where the emitter is standing and where it is pointing)
- This is me position. ("my" will change its meaning depending on who says the sentence)
- morning I'll go to the dentist. ("tomorrow" refers to different days, depending on when it is stated)
Deictics can be used orally or in writing. In the first case, a gesture, such as pointing a finger, can be used to make the word make sense. Instead, when used in a written way, they must refer to something that has already been mentioned above or is about to be mentioned in the text.
