The indirect compliment or indirect object refers towards whom or to that the action of the verb is directed. For example: I bought a cell phone for my niece.

Every indirect object (CI) is in the predicate of the sentence and answers the questions ¿To who?, ¿To what? orFor whom? Continuing with the previous example, the question should be:To who did I buy a cell phone? And the answer is the indirect object or indirect object: to my niece.

It is important to remember that, while the direct object or direct object is only present in sentences with transitive verbs, the indirect object or object can appear both in sentences with transitive or intransitive verbs.

How to recognize the indirect object?

  • Use the preposition "a" or "al". For example: Juana sent a message to Carlos / Macarena doesn't care what her mother thinks.
  • Can be replaced by unstressed personal pronouns. The pronouns "le", "les", "os", "me", "te", "se", "us" can replace the IC, without altering the meaning and coherence of the sentence. For example: Rita loaned Marcos a book. (Rita lent it)
  • In passive sentences the IQ remains. For example: Juan returned the notebook to Ramiro (active voice) / The notebook was returned by Juan to Ramiro (passive voice).
